10/1/2016 - Stitches in Time: quilts and coverlets

A new exhibit, “Stitches in Time,” will open at the San Bernardino County Museum in Redlands on Saturday, Oct. 1. The exhibit features quilts and coverlets selected from the museum’s history collections. The exhibit will continue through January.

“Quilting, in one form or another, has been in existence for thousands of years and it has been present in America since colonial times,” said Jennifer Dickerson, San Bernardino County Museum curator of history. “It is a practice that connects our cultures, bringing people together to create and preserve something by allowing both tradition and family heirlooms to be passed down through generations.”

The exhibit includes a selection of pieced quilts and woven coverlets dating from the 1840s to the 1930s.

“As you walk through this exhibit and examine these different pieces, you are getting a peek into the history of the time that these objects were made and a glimpse into the family history of the people who made them,” said Dickerson. “Different stories have been woven into the fabric of these quilts and coverlets, and it is our pleasure to share them with you.”

Stitches in Time and the County Museum’s other exciting events and exhibits reflect the effort by the Board of Supervisors to achieve the Countywide Vision by celebrating arts, culture, and education in the county, creating quality of life for residents and visitors.

The San Bernardino County Museum is at 2024 Orange Tree Lane, at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. The museum is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. General admission is $10 (adult), $8 (military or senior), $7 (student), and $5 (child aged 5 to 12).
