3/28/2015 - March Mammoth Madness at the Victor Valley Museum

March Mammoth Madness, a day all about prehistoric elephants, will be celebrated at the Victor Valley Museum in Apple Valley on Saturday, March 28, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The program activities, offered with the support of the City of Victorville, are included with paid museum admission.

“Mammoths are truly icons of the Ice Ages,” said Eric Scott, curator of paleontology at the San Bernardino County Museum. “Yet despite their enormous popularity, we still have much to learn about them. ‘March Mammoth Madness’ is a celebration of mammoth fossils beneath our feet, and why we find them so fascinating.”

March Mammoth Madness and the County Museum’s other exciting events and exhibits reflect the effort by the Board of Supervisors to achieve the Countywide Vision by celebrating arts, culture, and education in the county, creating quality of life for residents and visitors. The City of Victorville, the Town of Apple Valley, the City of Hesperia, and the Hesperia School District are among museum’s valued community partners.

Quintin Lake, a fossil preparator, will show how fossils are stabilized and readied for study and exhibit with demonstrations from 10 a.m. to noon and again from 1 to 4 p.m.

A lecture at 10:30 a.m., “What Makes a Mammoth,” by Doyle Trankina, paleontology artist, will include a hands-on art activity. Mammoth-themed activities especially for kids are scheduled from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m.

Jessie Atterholt, from University of California Berkeley, will speak on “The Victorville Mammoth: journeys in fossils and science,” at 2:00 p.m, and “Mammoths, Mastodons, and Mysteries,” is Eric Scott’s topic at 3:00 p.m.
