3/7/2015 - Family Fun Day: Crafts and Toys of the 1830s

Event date: Saturday, March 7, 2015

Museum visitors can try out a variety of crafts and tasks common in the 1830s during a Family Fun Day on Saturday, March 7, 2015 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. All activities are included with museum admission. Activities include dipping candles and making corn husk dolls to take home, and playing with old-fashioned toys.

“We designed this Family Fun Day to share activities from Mountain Man times, to complement our new exhibit, Turn Left at the Rockies,” said Jolene Redvale, curator of education. “Mountain Men probably helped dip candles when they were young, and maybe even made corn husk dolls, as it wasn’t seen as just a girl’s activity. Wooden toys were often carved or assembled by kids themselves, so mountain men would have done that as youngsters—some may have even played with them as adults, because some games never go out of style. People all over the country played with such toys, and still do. Some, like Jacobs ladder, are even available for purchase in our Museum Store.”

The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. General admission is $10 (adult), $8 (military or senior), $7 (student), and $5 (child aged 5 to 12). Children under five and Museum Association members are admitted free. Parking is free. For more information, visit www.sbcountymuseum.org. The museum is accessible to persons with disabilities.
