7/12/2010 - UVMC Named Level IV Trauma Center

On July 1st, Ukiah Valley Medical Center was officially designated as a Level IV Trauma Center in the Coastal Valleys Emergency Medical Services Region.

“Having a local Trauma Center is a vital addition to our community,” says Bethany Chaney, RN, UVMC Trauma Coordinator. “It was a true team effort, with everyone at UVMC working tirelessly for this moment. This designation is the latest step in UVMC’s ongoing mission to offer the best possible health care right here at home; helping our neighbors when they need it most, saving critical minutes and even lives.”

Specifically, the designation means UVMC meets criteria for Level IV Trauma care – equipment and resources necessary for initial stabilization and personnel knowledgeable in the treatment of adult and pediatric trauma.

After an onsite review last month, representatives from the Coastal Valleys EMS Agency, Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital Trauma Center and Napa’s Queen of the Valley Trauma Center came away impressed with UVMC’s preparation, dedication and commitment to trauma care services, resulting in this breakthrough designation.

“Medical emergencies can occur at any given time or location and require a coordinated effort involving multiple medical disciplines to ensure an expeditious response and high standard of care,” says Tim Rohan, Emergency Department Director. “The UVMC Trauma Care Team has been designed to incorporate all hospital departments into a dynamic emergency medical care system that is focused on rapid access to emergency procedures, patient assessment, stabilization of patients and their transportation.”

Chris Dewey, “I am very proud to live in a community that has such a caring and dedicated staff as UVMC, and I’m equally proud of the accomplishments made by UVMC to assist all emergency responders in providing the best emergency care possible. Congratulations UVMC on such a great step forward.”

James Wattenburger “This is an outstanding event for our county, one that the whole county should be proud of, because it shows the High degree of care provided by UVMC personnel and also improves upon that level of care provided to our citizens in their greatest time of need.”  Says Jim Wattenburger , CalFire Assistant Chief and Mendocino County Fire Chief’s representative to the County’s Emergency Medical Care Committee.

John McCowen “With this designation, local trauma patients and their families will be able to receive treatment close to home instead of spending valuable time en route to other medical facilities.”
