MOMENTS WITH MARTHA

Martha Green

One recent morning I woke up with a lot on my mind. For instance: several of my friends have lost their jobs; many of my fellow business owners are worried sick because their daily sales are so far down they don’t know if they can make it and others have already been forced to close; some of my friends are losing their homes; my tenants can’t pay their rent on time; I have had the worst year in real estate in the 23 years I have been an agent; friends that were retired are now seeking employment; the bank that I loved has closed; the only real department store in town has filed for bankruptcy protection; my good friend’s son had a serious accident. And these were my thoughts just in the first few minutes of my day! This is a terrible time in our lives with the economy bringing us to our knees.

Then I went to my office on Monday morning, and as I was checking my e-mail I clicked onto one from a dear friend. Even if you have already seen the message it contains, I just had to share it because it helped me so much. I do not know where all the thoughts came from as there was not credit given to the writer.

It began: Remember, you are too blessed to be stressed! (Really?? Are you really talking to me??) Realize that life is a school and that you are here to learn. Pass all your tests. Problems are simply part of the curriculum that appear and fade away like algebra class, but the lessons you learn will last a lifetime. Don’t compare your life with others; you have no idea what their journey is all about. Make peace with your past so it won’t mess up your present. What other people think about you is none of your business. Do the right thing. (What??) Even if it kills you!! Call your family often. (I wish most of them were still here!!) Get rid of anything that isn’t useful, beautiful or joyful. (I’ll start now!!) Take a 30-minute walk every day and smile while you are walking. (Tomorrow!!) Life isn’t fair but it is still good. You don’t have to win every argument, agree to disagreements. Live the Three Es: Energy, Empathy and Enthusiasm. And the Three Fs: Faith, Family and Friends. Spend more time with people over the age of seventy and under the age of six. Dream more while you are awake. Try to make at least three people smile each day. (I’ve got this one nailed.) Burn the candles, use the nice sheets – don’t save them for a special occasion. Today is special. Life is too short to hate anyone. Forgive everyone for everything. Time heals almost everything; give time, time. However good or bad a situation is, it will change. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up, and show up. (I’ll try, I promise.) (And, finally, the best ones.) No one is in charge of your happiness except you. (And really finally)...the best is yet to come. Hooray!

Read these over time and time again and see if you don’t feel better. I did.
