1/1/2009 - Christmas in RedlandsCHRISTMAS IN REDLANDS Karen Bergman Everything changes in December. With the first gatherings of family and friends at Thanksgiving behind us, it is easy to turn our hearts to the joys of the holiday season, especially in Redlands. There are some special events and traditions that are unique to our town that everyone should put on their list of things to do at least once. The month begins with the 61st annual Feast of Lights at the University of Redlands on December 5, 6, 7, and 8. The Feast of Lights is a glorious night of visual and musical delights celebrating the birth of the Messiah through choral music, exquisitely created tableaux, and Scripture readings, all accompanied by the University orchestra. It is impossible to be prepared for the power and beauty of more than 100 singers from three choral groups composed of members of the University of Redlands student body and faculty as well as participants from our own community. Equally intriguing are those actors who come together to recreate a famous scene or painting and “hold that pose” for what seems like an eternity. Be sure to stay until the candles illumine the darkened Memorial Chapel and the last melody begins to play. The tradition allows the audience to leave as they choose during this last song. It is a feeling like no other to leave the flickering light of the chapel with the sights and sounds clinging to your soul only to step out into a starry night and feast your eyes on luminaries stretching across the university quad. It is a feeling that lingers long after the performance has ended. On December 6, there’s the Redlands annual Christmas parade that starts at 6 p.m. You won’t have to look hard to see friends and neighbors, and even some of your own kids, riding, walking or marching to holiday tunes. It’s not really a secret but the chances are very good that Santa will be there, too. Don’t miss the 40th annual YMCA Home Tour on December 7 for the opportunity to walk through some of the most interesting homes in Redlands. These homes sparkle even more brightly during the holiday season with unique decorations highlighting architectural features and reflecting the individual homeowner’s style. That same weekend is the YMCA’s Fine Arts and Crafts show. There will be over 25 artisans displaying crafts, art, jewelry, baked goods and other culinary delights. You might find a Christmas gift there for that hard-to-shop-for aunt. Who could miss the Inland Master Chorale on December 13 and 14? Since 1980, they have entertained the people of Redlands with stirring music throughout the year. This year, Handel’s “Messiah” will be presented at the First United Methodist Church with a chamber orchestra. If you have only heard the Hallelujah Chorus, now is the time to enjoy the entire piece as presented by Roger W. Duffy and this exceptional group of voices. Finally, Celtic Spring will team up with the Kevin R. Blandford Memorial Pipe Band at the University of Redlands Memorial Chapel to present an evening called A Celtic Christmas on December 14th. This event is sponsored by the Redlands Community Music Association. With the current popularity of all things Celtic, this event could turn into a Redlands tradition. Don’t forget to catch some theater like Miracle on 34th Street at Lifehouse Theater or On the Radio at the Redlands Footlighters. Redlands in December is an extravaganza of artistic displays throughout the community. With all the rush of activities and parties, you may be tempted to hurry from one gathering to the next but don’t forget to savor the sweetest of all, the simple homecoming of friends and family who have drifted far from our town.
