11/1/2008 - Age Proofing Your Memory - Can It Really Be Done?

- Arlene Taylor, PhD

Your memory is critical to you. Without your memories and an ability to recall them, you would be unable to know who you are and what has happened to you in the past. You would not recognize your loved ones, dearest friends, or beloved pets. You would forget anniversaries, birthdays, holidays, your favorite things. Everything! Fortunately, you live in a time where research related to the aging process is burgeoning.  Brain research is shedding new light on the many ways the brain changes with age and how these changes might be influenced. At least three types of memory have been identified. Two of them tend to weaken with age. One can strengthen with age if challenging mental stimulation is present and ongoing.  Though genes undoubtedly play some role, there are many things you can do throughout life to make a difference in brain health as you age. Common "wisdom" says your mind gets weaker with age but we now know that exercising your brain and continuing to learn new things throughout your life can help keep your brain healthy. In other words, you can get better as you get older! Also, as you age, you know more, and understand how to use what you know in the best way. This new awareness helped to trigger the writing of my new book, co-authored with Sharlet Briggs, entitled "Age-Proofing Your Memory". If you’d like to know more, the book is now available from Amazon.com. Happy reading - and remembering!
